The Substance Abuse team at Woodward Community Based Services is expanding to meet the needs of our community! WCBS offers substance abuse services including Assessment/ASAM, EOP & IOP Outpatient Services (groups and individuals) for both adults and adolescents. We would like to expand our programing to include Prevention. Our goals include expanding prevention outreach to decrease high risk and addictive behaviors by implementing effective, evidence-based prevention strategies. Our team members network with other social services agencies, community coalitions, local schools, parents and businesses to promote healthy life choices. We are looking for a Prevention Specialist/SUD Counselor to grow with us.

Develop relationships with community agencies and plan prevention outreach activities. Provide ASAM and SUD counseling using harm reduction, moderation, and/or abstinence approaches depending on client goals, preferences, and risks within an outpatient clinic. Use motivational interviewing, and a person-centered approach to assist clients with moving along the change continuum in various areas of life impacted by substance use. Work collaboratively within the SUD team, and behavioral health team, to serve our clients. Must follow best practices as required by WCBS, licensure, and joint commission accreditation.

Duties include overseeing all requirements related to successful implementation to assigned grant(s). In addition to providing education and programming to community partners, the person in this role will track required data, evaluate programs, and coordinate dissemination of information related to assigned grant(s). They will also prepare and submit required reports and provide other necessary information to grant authorities. Willingness to meet clients “where they are at” in change process, support client driven goals, and efforts to provide culturally responsive services required. Prefer additional experience serving adults with co-occurring difficulties including mental illness, poverty, homelessness, and physical health disabilities/conditions.


  • Administer, score and asses the SASSI and MAST completed by every client referred.
  • Provide assessment/evaluation, treatment and discharge services for clients referred to the Substance Abuse Program.
  • Document all services in a timely fashion
  • Conduct and participate in treatment plan reviews to assess each client’s treatment planning for appropriateness and timeliness.
  • Conduct individual and group counseling and therapy sessions.
  • Develop individual treatment plans, discharge and after care plans.
  • Attend meetings for clients referred to the Substance Abuse Program if requested.
  • Complete daily progress notes in a timely fashion.
  • Safety training completed annually.
  • Abide by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (42 USC& 201 et seq.)
  • Assist in marketing program and recruiting of clients.
  • Assist in development of program.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by manager and / or Director.


  • A Bachelor’s degree in a Behavioral Sciences or Humanities preferred. 
  • At least one year experience in the treatment of mental health, behavioral health or substance abuse field and certified as a Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor is preferred.  
  • Previous experience as a Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor will be considered.  
  • If not certified the ability to earn a CADC within 1 ½ years of hire date and complete all necessary training to maintain CADC throughout employment.  
  • It is an essential function of the position that the staff member be capable of participating in physical training activities.
